Surprise
win for Woodstock
I've unexpectedly won a Golden Kayak award
on the independent music site IACmusic.com for "The
Truth Will Set You Free", a throwaway song I recorded
featuring my kitchen bin on kick-drum. I had set out to
write a one-chord song but it was really boring so I added
some chords and it sounded better after that.
The song was inspired by turning on the TV and immediately
hearing the phrase "The Truth Will Set You Free",
three times in succession, said by three different people
on three different channels and in three totally different
contexts. I thought that worth documenting.
To my complete astonishment the song has just picked up
Best Electronic Song 2008 in this rather chi-chi awards
ceremony. Past winners include Melody Gardot, Steve Ison
(who has won another one this year, unsurprisingly) and
some bloke called Pete Townshend.
I have just under a year to bask.
